Dealing with scars from acne breakouts in the past can be painful. Thankfully Dr. Schultz and the Park Avenue Skin Care team treats all kinds of acne scarring with a variety of methods to ensure that smooth skin isn’t just your skin of the past.
As we get older, our skin naturally loses collagen, which provides volume to our skin. This can contribute to how noticeable any acne scars become and over time, they may become even more pronounced. From his Upper East Side office, Dr. Schultz has a variety of ways to heal acne scars and smooth out your skin. Whether through careful, localized surgery, Laser Treatments, or Fillers, you’ll have the opportunity to undergo customized treatment for your particular kind of scarring, giving you the best possible results for your smoothest skin.
Dr. Schultz explains that ice pick scars are “deep, angular, and small in diameter.” Although there is no way to fill those scars in, you can actually apply anesthesia, painlessly cut out the scar and sew up the skin which, Dr. Schultz assures, “creates an excellent result in improving and smoothing out the scar.”
Crater type scarring has the gentle sloping borders of a crater on the moon or the shape of a saucer. With this kind of scar, Dr. Schultz says, “You can actually fill in the craters with Filler from below, which lasts about 6 months and will need to be maintained.” Another technique to fix the scar is to perform subcision. With subcision, Dr. Schultz says, “The bottom of the scar is actually separated from the anchoring collagen below it which pulls it down into the skin creating the crater shaped depressed scar. The bottom of the crater then pops back up, and we put Filler underneath it to produce a very nice level result.” And finally, you can always use Fraxel or Profractional Lasers to smooth these crater scars as well.
Boxcar scars have walls that are vertical, not angular or sloping, and the bottom of the scar is horizontal so it looks like a rectangle or a box. You can treat this similarly to an ice pick scar, or you can also attempt to improve these with laser procedures or subcision.
When you’re treating your acne scars, you want to be sure you’re in the best (and most confident!) hands, and that’s what you’ll get with Dr. Schultz at his Upper East Side office. Treating acne scars can be very labor intensive as most scars have to be treated individually. Dr. Schultz has the experience and precision to skillfully perform the detailed work required for the best results. If your acne scarring requires surgery, Dr. Schultz will temporarily tape the wounds after the stitches are removed to create a much less conspicuous line from the removal of the scar. If your acne scarring requires laser treatments, our office has extensive experience with lasers so you can be sure you’re getting the most effective laser and the highest level of experience for your treatment.
Before treating your acne scars, it’s vital that you’ve cleared your active acne since new acne can lead to new scarring. Inflammation due to active acne also potentially reduces some of the efficacy of acne scar treatments. After you’ve cleared your acne, at your appointment Dr. Schultz will examine your skin and determine whether the best treatment for you is Filler, Laser Treatments, surgery, or a combination of them. Most treatments are painless and are done with numbing agents so you won’t feel discomfort when fixing your acne scars. For Fillers, you will see immediate results, Laser Treatments produce gradual sustained improvements starting shortly after the procedure and those results continue to improve over the next few months, but no matter which treatment is right for you, you will see excellent results in reducing and improving your acne scarring.
